Player Profiles

Among the players expected to compete in the UBS Men’s Futures of Pittsburgh are:

  • Jean-Yves Aubone, 21, of Miami is ranked No. 481. Aubone earned a year-end ranking for the first time in 2007, registering at No. 1,330. In April, he reached the round of 16 at the USTA Pro Circuit $50,000 event in Tallahassee, Fla. In 2008, Aubone posted a 13-3 record with a tournament title at $10,000 Peoria, Ill., and $15,000 Hammond, La. He also advanced to the final at $10,000 Joplin, Mo., and the semifinals at $10,000 Pittsburgh, both in July 2008. Aubone recently completed his junior season at Florida State, earning All-American honors in both singles and doubles. Aubone was ranked as high as No. 3 in the USTA junior rankings and climbed to the No. 13 college ranked player after his sophomore season at FSU, the highest singles ranking in Seminole history.
  • Marcus Fugate, 21, of Fairport, N.Y., is ranked No. 756. Fugate burst onto the professional scene in 2006, defeating Donald Young during the year and advancing to his first professional final at $10,000 Buffalo. This year, Fugate competed in eight USTA Pro Circuit main draws and advanced to the semifinals of $10,000 Orange Park, Fla., in May and the quarterfinals at $15,000 Little Rock, Ark., in April. In 2008, he reached the singles final at $10,000 Tampa, Fla., against Daniel Garza, and captured the doubles title at three $10,000 events: Vero Beach, Fla., Peoria, Ill., and Claremont, Calif. As a junior in 2005, he reached the singles quarterfinals and won doubles at the Easter Bowl.
  • 2007 Pittsburgh singles champion Rhyne Williams, 18, of Knoxville, Tenn., is ranked No. 756. Williams became the youngest winner on men’s USTA Pro Circuit in 2007 when he won $10,000 Pittsburgh at 16 years, four months. This year, Williams qualified for both $10,000 Boca Raton, Fla., and $10,000 Hollywood, Fla., after winning four qualifying matches in each tournament. He also reached the doubles semifinals of $10,000 Tampa, Fla., with partner Adam El Mihdawy, and $10,000 Plantation, Fla., with Ryan Lipman. Williams thrived in the juniors, winning the coveted 2007 Easter Bowl title to rise to No. 20 in the ITF junior rankings that year. (He was the highest ranked 16-year-old boy in the ITF junior rankings.)
  • Adam El Mihdawy, 19, of Long Island City, N.Y., is ranked No. 859. El Mihdawy spent most of 2009 playing in ITF tournaments overseas in Egypt and India and is competing in his fifth USTA Pro Circuit event of the year in his third main draw. In May 2008, he advanced to the semifinals of $10,000 Orange Park, Fla., his best showing on the USTA Pro Circuit, before falling to eventual champion Greg Jones of Australia. In early 2008, he advanced to the quarterfinals of $10,000 Boca Raton, Fla., after winning four matches in qualifying.  He also reached the quarterfinals at $15,000 Little Rock, Ark., and $10,000 Tampa, Fla., that year. He was a quarterfinalist at the 2007 USTA International Spring Championships on the junior circuit.
Also expected to compete in the main draw are Ryan Young, 24, ranked No. 699, who reached the doubles final of $15,000 Little Rock, Ark., in April; Bryan Koniecko, 21, ranked No. 737, who is competing in his second USTA Pro Circuit event of the year and reached the finals of $10,000 Peoria, Ill., in July 2008; and Christopher Racz, 21, ranked No. 954, who has competed extensively in tournaments in South America and is playing in his second USTA Pro Circuit event of the year.

Among those in the qualifying rounds are Sekou Bangoura, 17, ranked No. 175 in the ITF Junior World Rankings, who qualified for $10,000 Rochester, N.Y., last week and reached the Round of 16 at the Easter Bowl this year; Cory Parr, 21, ranked No. 1149, who reached the doubles quarterfinals at $10,000 Rochester partnering with Marcus Fugate and advanced to the semifinals of $10,000 Godfrey, Ill., in 2008, his best showing on the USTA Pro Circuit; and Blake Strode, 21, ranked No. 1155 who qualified for the $10,000 event in Rochester, N.Y. last week.
